Offender’s Registry

August 21st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

There’s a new web project that helps you discover if you have any Sexual Offenders living in your neighborhood (or nearby your neighborhood). This all stems from Megan’s Law which was enacted after a girl was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by a repeat sex offender. He had moved into her neighborhood — actually, directly across the street from her.

Our justice system isn’t perfect. There are people who are 19 and have consensual sex with a 17 year old and get accused — and convicted — of statutory rape. But it’s still good to know how lives in your neighborhood.

I really wish I were retired sometimes

July 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

It’s days like today that make me want to up and quit my job and move straight into retirement. I obviously can’t discuss the details online and risk being fired as I’m not quite set up financially to work from home!

But this blog is a step in the right direction.

What about you? Are you stuck in your job? Trapped with no where to go?

A benefit of consulting: fast cars

June 3rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

As a consultant, you should be earning a fairly healthy salary. You always hear of stories of people (consultants) that earn hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and get to blow the money on whatever they want.

That may not be the best personal finance strategy; I’m just saying it happens.

One thing you can spend your hard earned consulting money on? A bunch of high performance engine parts for your sports car. New or old, you can hook up with a high quality machining shop to really fine tune your engine.

I’m actually more a fan of the older sports cars. Newer cars, at least some of them in my opinion, are designed so that only your dealership or authorized service shop can work on the car. I know that’s how some of the new BMW’s are set up — there is a plastic “shroud” over just about every part of the engine. Definitely not for the driver to work on!

Older cars — BMWs, Porsches, MGs, Alfa Romeos… take your pick, now that’s what I’m talking about. You can take a socket set and really go to town on the engine all by yourself if you so choose. Check out Ora’s Engines!

Coupons equal saved money

May 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

I’ve talked about cutting out coupons or asking for discounts in the past. Simply asking for a 5% discount can be worth a lot of money over time. Using coupons to get a better deal, over time, will save you a ton of money.

We’ve also talked a bit about taking clients out for meals or weekend trips as part of your business plan.

A lot of people like to go fishing. I am not one of them. However, if I had a million dollar account that I was trying to win over and they loved to go fishing, you’d better believe I would find a way to be interested in it. I would buy the equipment if I had to — but I would use coupons or discounts as a way to cut my costs. I would shop the online catalog store for fishing rods, reels, line, tackle and otherfishing gear to my heart’s content.

I might pick up some thumbdrives to give away to clients at Best Buy. They seem to be quite popular at conferences. I might run a contest and give away a gift card from a solid retailer (Target is a great retailer… love them!). If I needed a new laptop, I might try Tiger Direct as a way to save some money.

There are a million ways to woo clients and save money at the same time. Coupon-ing is just one of those ways.
