Fortune magazine gives us 8 ways to recession proof your career. Let’s take a look.
- Think of ways to increase revenues or cut costs.
- Be visible.
- Talk up your contributions.
- Keep a broad perspective.
- Get your skills up to date.
- No whining allowed.
- Never stop networking.
- Update your resume, call headhunters/recruiters back, start picturing where else you might want to work.
The most important ones off of this list are to never stop networking and to keep your skills up to date. Those two things alone can land you your next job. The other steps are important — like calling recruiters back — but those two are most important. Something like 2/3rds of people find their jobs through networking.
However, a recruiter has a large network, too. Your recruiter wants to plug you into his network so he can access yours. Sure, he wants to place you in your next position so he can earn his commission. But he wants to place your five friends even more.
