Today’s Your 50th Birthday. You’re Fired.

What would you do? Another article from Forbes, 50 and Fired, discusses what to do if you get let go in the later parts of your career.

That’s a tough situation to be in. You want to have some money saved up for emergencies, and getting laid off definitely counts as an emergency.

As we’ve discussed before, build up and talk with your network. Be willing to take a bit of a pay cut to get your foot back in the door. It’s a lot easier to climb the ladder when you have a ladder to climb.

Talk Yourself Up: A Fine Line

April 6th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in 7 Step Consulting, Recruiting Mole

I talked about recession proofing your career yesterday. One of the points that Forbes made was to talk up your accomplishments.

That’s a very fine line.

You definitely want to be recognized for your contributions to your income whether it be a start up with five employees or a large multi-national company with 20,000 employees.

Yet, you never want to be “that guy” that only talks about himself. Humility and a hard work ethic will get you a lot father than being Mr. Boasting. Just my opinion…

8 Ways to Recession Proof Your Career

April 5th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in 7 Step Consulting, Recruiting Mole

Fortune magazine gives us 8 ways to recession proof your career. Let’s take a look.

  • Think of ways to increase revenues or cut costs.
  • Be visible.
  • Talk up your contributions.
  • Keep a broad perspective.
  • Get your skills up to date.
  • No whining allowed.
  • Never stop networking.
  • Update your resume, call headhunters/recruiters back, start picturing where else you might want to work.

The most important ones off of this list are to never stop networking and to keep your skills up to date. Those two things alone can land you your next job. The other steps are important — like calling recruiters back — but those two are most important. Something like 2/3rds of people find their jobs through networking.

However, a recruiter has a large network, too. Your recruiter wants to plug you into his network so he can access yours. Sure, he wants to place you in your next position so he can earn his commission. But he wants to place your five friends even more.

Who Am I?

I’ll cover this in the About page eventually, but just so we cover it.

I’m the Recruiting Mole. I have worked in the staffing industry with a focus on Information Technology placements. I’m not the most experienced or savvy recruiter, but I do have some experience under my belt. I can’t give you too many details as I can’t reveal my identity. I might lose my job.

What this blog is about

April 2nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in 7 Step Consulting, Recruiting Mole

I just purchased this domain. I intend to develop this blog for two different reasons.

The first is to be a commentary on recruiting candidates. I’ll share stories from my experience, as well as what I hear around the industry. We’ll talk about how to find quality candidates as well.

Secondly, I’ll talk about how to become a consultant. Thus, 7 Step Consulting.
